Welcome to Recife, the vibrant capital of Pernambuco, Brazil, and the proud host city of the TUFH 2027 Conference. Known for its rich cultural heritage, warm hospitality and unique blend of history and innovation, Recife offers visitors an unforgettable experience both during and beyond the conference.
To help you make the most of your stay, we have prepared this tourism guide featuring some of the region’s most remarkable attractions. While many recommendations are located within Recife, we also encourage you to explore nearby destinations such as Olinda, a UNESCO World Heritage City, and Ipojuca (Porto de Galinhas), home to some of Brazil’s most famous natural pools and beaches. These destinations are a little farther from the conference venue and may require additional travel time, so we recommend extending your stay or setting aside an extra day to fully enjoy them. We believe these experiences are well worth the visit and will allow you to discover the incredible cultural and natural diversity of Pernambuco.

Explore a Cidade Alta Olinda (High City Olinda)
Located about 15 - 20 km from Boa Viagem
Olinda is the historic city and one of the most vibrant cultural districts in northeastern Brazil. Visitors can easily reach the area by Uber, taxi, or public bus, with an average travel time of 30–40 minutes, depending on traffic.Good to know: All of the attractions and recommended restaurants listed below are located within Olinda and are within walking distance of one another. After arriving in the neighborhood, you can easily explore the area on foot.
Alto da Sé
In front of the church, there is a square overlooking the sea and Recife, where visitors can find handicraft stalls and traditional foods, including tapioca. The tapioca stalls usually open from 3:00 p.m., offering visitors the opportunity to enjoy this traditional local delicacy while taking in the beautiful view.
Museum of Sacred Art of Pernambuco (MASPE)
Located in a historic complex at Alto da Sé, MASPE houses sacred art pieces and religious objects that help tell the history of Olinda and Pernambuco, with highlights including statues, paintings, and goldsmithing works. It is a quick yet interesting stop for those who enjoy culture and heritage.

Olinda Art & Grill
Located in the historic Alto da Sé, directly opposite Olinda Cathedral, Olinda Art & Grill offers Brazilian cuisine, seafood and grilled dishes in a welcoming setting with panoramic views of Olinda and Recife. The restaurant combines regional flavours, attentive service and live music, providing visitors with an authentic local dining experience. It is also known for its traditional desserts, especially its signature baked coconut dessert served with ice cream.

Explore Recife Antigo (Old Recife)
Located about 10–12 km from Boa Viagem, Recife Antigo is the historic heart of the city and one of the most vibrant cultural districts in northeastern Brazil. Visitors can easily reach the area by Uber, taxi, or public bus, with an average travel time of 20–30 minutes, depending on traffic.
Good to know: All of the attractions and recommended restaurants listed below are located within Recife Antigo and are within walking distance of one another. After arriving in the neighborhood, you can easily explore the area on foot.

Marco Zero Square
Distance from Boa Viagem: approximately 10 km (20–25 minutes by car). Ride-hailing services such as Uber are widely available, safe, and generally the easiest way to travel between Boa Viagem and Recife Antigo. Taxis are also readily available at hotels, while public buses provide an economical alternative for visitors wishing to explore the city.
Marco Zero is the symbolic birthplace of Recife and one of the city’s most iconic landmarks. Overlooking the Capibaribe River and the Atlantic Ocean, the square features the famous “Rosa dos Ventos” mosaic by Brazilian artist Cícero Dias. It is surrounded by historic buildings, cultural centers, cafés, and offers beautiful views of the city’s waterways.

Cais do Sertão Museum
Distance from Boa Viagem: approximately 10 km (20–25 minutes by car)
The Cais do Sertão Museum is one of Brazil’s most innovative museums. Through immersive exhibitions, music, audiovisual installations, and interactive experiences, it celebrates the culture, traditions, and resilience of the people from Brazil’s semi-arid Northeast (“Sertão”). Inspired by the work of legendary musician Luiz Gonzaga, the museum offers visitors a unique perspective on the region’s identity.

OLINDA Attraction 4: Streets and Hills of Olinda
Rua do Bom Jesus
Distance from Boa Viagem: approximately 10 km (20–30 minutes by car)
Rua do Bom Jesus is one of Recife’s most charming and historically significant streets. Recognized among the most beautiful streets in the world for its colorful colonial architecture and vibrant atmosphere, it reflects the city’s rich multicultural heritage. The street is home to the Kahal Zur Israel Synagogue, the first synagogue in the Americas, as well as art galleries, cafés, and local craft shops.

Moendo na Laje
A popular restaurant overlooking Marco Zero, Moendo na Laje offers traditional northeastern Brazilian cuisine with beautiful views of Recife’s historic waterfront. It’s an excellent place to experience authentic regional flavors after exploring the neighborhood.

Venda do Bom Jesus
Located on the iconic Rua do Bom Jesus, this relaxed bar and restaurant is a great place to experience the lively atmosphere of Recife Antigo. The menu features Brazilian cuisine, seafood, regional appetizers, and refreshing drinks, making it an excellent stop for lunch, dinner, or an evening out after exploring the historic district.

GENERAL INFORMATION:
Located along Recife’s southern coastline, Boa Viagem is one of the city’s most vibrant neighborhoods, known for its beautiful beachfront, excellent restaurants, shopping, and easy access to hotels and the airport. Most of the attractions below are located within the neighborhood and can be reached on foot, by Uber, taxi, or a short bus ride.
Good to know: Most conference hotels are located in Boa Viagem, making these attractions ideal for visitors looking to explore the city before or after conference activities.
Boa Viagem Beach
Boa Viagem Beach is Recife’s most famous urban beach, known for its warm waters, long stretch of sand, and rows of coconut trees along the shoreline. It is one of the city’s main postcards and a great place to relax, walk, or enjoy the sunset.

Beach Safety: Swim only in designated safe areas. Do not enter the water where shark warning signs are posted. During low tide, the natural coral reefs form shallow pools that are ideal for enjoying the beach. Always follow local safety signs and lifeguard guidance.
Boa Viagem Craft Market
Located next to Boa Viagem Beach, the traditional craft market is one of the best places to purchase local handicrafts, souvenirs, regional artwork, lacework, and gifts. It also offers a variety of local snacks and beverages, providing visitors with an authentic taste of Pernambuco’s culture.

Opening hours: Daily, from 2:00 PM to 10:00 PM, with the liveliest atmosphere from late afternoon through the evening.

Dona Lindu Park
Designed by the renowned Brazilian architect Oscar Niemeyer, Dona Lindu Park is a cultural and leisure complex featuring exhibition spaces, theaters, gardens, and open-air areas. It frequently hosts cultural events and offers a pleasant setting for a stroll by the seaside.

Located just steps from Boa Viagem Beach, Entre Amigos Praia is well known for its fresh seafood, contemporary Brazilian cuisine, and welcoming atmosphere. It is an excellent choice for visitors looking to enjoy local flavors in a relaxed setting near the ocean.

Explore Porto de Galinhas and Maracaípe
Porto de Galinhas e Maracaípe
Located about 60 km south of Recife, Porto de Galinhas and Maracaípe are among Brazil’s most celebrated beach destinations. Famous for crystal-clear waters, natural coral pools, and warm tropical weather, they make an ideal full-day excursion from Recife.
Travel time from Boa Viagem: approximately 1 to 1.5 hours, depending on traffic.
Getting there
- Uber: approximately R$100–150 each way (prices vary depending on demand and time of day).
- Taxi: approximately R$180–250 each way.
- Rental car: around 1 hour via the PE-009 highway (pedage applies).
- Day tours: Several local agencies offer round-trip transportation and guided tours departing from Recife hotels.
Tip: If traveling in a group of three or four people, Uber can be a convenient and cost-effective option.
What to Do in One Day
Morning – Porto de Galinhas
Begin your day at Porto de Galinhas Beach, internationally recognized for its warm turquoise waters and natural pools formed by coral reefs during low tide.
If visiting at low tide, take a traditional jangada (wooden raft) ride to the natural pools, where you can observe colorful tropical fish in crystal-clear water.
Spend some time exploring the charming village center, filled with artisan shops, cafés, and local boutiques.
Lunch
Enjoy fresh seafood or traditional northeastern cuisine at one of the many beachfront restaurants overlooking the ocean. Take a stroll through Porto de Galinhas village to shop for local handicrafts, enjoy Brazilian ice cream, or relax at a café before heading back to Recife.
Afternoon – Maracaípe
Only a few minutes from Porto de Galinhas, Maracaípe Beach offers a quieter atmosphere, long stretches of sand, and excellent conditions for surfing.
Nature lovers can also visit Pontal de Maracaípe, where the river meets the sea. This protected mangrove area is famous for its seahorse habitat and spectacular sunsets. Guided boat tours through the mangroves are available throughout the day.

- Bring sunscreen, a hat, sunglasses, light clothing, and cash or a credit card.
- Most restaurants and shops accept international credit cards.
- English is not widely spoken, so translation apps can be helpful.
Porto de Galinhas and Maracaípe can easily be visited in a single day from Recife. We recommend departing between 7:30–8:00 AM and returning in the late afternoon or early evening to make the most of your visit.
